The world’s smallest artificial heart, meant as a temporary measure, has saved the life of a 16 month old baby boy. He was suffering from a condition called dilated myocardiopathy whereby the heart fibres are stretched or enlarged, resulting in a weaker heart which eventually can’t pump blood, and stops.
The minute artificial heart had only been tested in animals before, and it only ended up having to last the 13 days needed before the young boy received a donor heart of his own. It’s so amazing what can be done these days!
