When you meet Ryan, and spend any amount of time with him, you will soon learn that this is a man with a big heart and spends his time doing things he loves most in life…..playing soccer for Vasco da Gama and spending time with family and friends. He has a pretty hectic modelling schedule, and he is also passionate about his presenting work that he does.
When Ryan was at school he had to choose between sports, and when he was invited to try out for Manchester United, while still at school, soccer was the obvious choice. He was invited back after matric, but struggled to get a work permit when he was there, so he returned home, aged only 18, and signed for Supersport United. The following year he signed for Bidvest Wits.
Ryan played overseas in Finland, Turkey and Cyprus, playing 6 UEFA under 23 games, and scoring 2 goals against Nigeria. After his knee injury, Ryan returned home shortly before the World Cup, and signed for Thanda Royal for 8 months, and then moved to Moroka Swallows where he won goal of the season in his first season in the PSL.
When Ryan is in serious training mode, he does a hectic gym session in the morning, and his field work in the afternoon. On the day of a big game, what works for him is skipping breakfast, eating a healthy carbohydrate meal about 3-4 hours before the game and rehydrating all day long. In one game, Ryan tells me he can lose up to 5kg’s just due to water loss……….my kinda game! He loves a healthy snack of bagels and cream cheese for brekkie or lunch! Yum!
Ryan has amazing sponsors to keep him in touch and looking his best, since he’s HOT property on SA’s social and events calendar…they include PUMA, GUESS, POLICE, BLACKBERRY, and VIRGIN ACTIVE, and of course, how can we forget his gorgeous and sparkling BriteSmile, compliments of little old me at De Waterkant Health! He is definitely a glass half full kinda guy, and always likes to look at the positive side of life, and would love to play professionally for another year or 2 and then concentrate a bit more on coaching and fitness, as well as some presenting, which he already does on the occasional morning on the Expresso Show!
Speaking of giving, and if you follow him on twitter….@RyanBotha (he’s awesome at replying!), you will notice that Ryan spends a great deal of time giving back, whether it’s through Virgin Active and their Outreach Programmes, or through SAHealthblog and Link Outreach. We flew up to Johannesburg together, last year July, to give out 500 goodie bags, along with 20 other celebs, to kiddies at the old Johannesburg General Hospital (now Charlotte Maxeke) for Madiba Day the following day….and what a success it was! Have a look at the album HERE.
Why not join one of Ryan’s SWEAT 1000 classes in Sea Point where you will be put through your paces, no matter what your fitness level! It’s a hardcore 60 minutes of pure sweat……..and ladies…..we may even persuade him to do it topless! You can book classes HERE.
Have a look at Ryan’s new and updated website and don’t forget to stay up to date with what he’s getting up to via twitter.
